Patti Digh Workshop and Speaker Event

March 29th, 2009 by Cate | 1 Comment | Filed in Community Events, SIETAR-NC Event

Join us next Sunday, April 5 for for a workshop and public lecture with renowned intercultural trainer, author, and SIETAR-USA keynote speaker Patti Digh!

Thanks to the Robertson Scholars Collaboration Fund for making these events possible.

Event #1: Workshop –
New Experiential Tools for Exploring Diversity and Intercultural Issues

Light refreshments from the Mediterranean Deli will be provided for workshop participants.

***This event is free but space is limited. Please RSVP by Friday, April 3 to: info “at” sietarnc “dot” org

Workshop Description:

We learn best by first having a “hot” experience that knocks us off balance, then making meaning of it second. And yet we often teach in exactly the opposite order, providing models and meaning, then asking if those fit the experiences we have had. This highly interactive workshop will approach training from the learner’s perspective, will embrace surprise at the “edges” where learning really occurs, and will explore ways to achieve diversity and intercultural learning through experiential processes. We will:

•    Utilize unique experiential training tools to explore concepts like dominant culture
•    Move from intellectual learning to embodied learning
•    Explore how to teach core intercultural and diversity concepts through experiential and nontraditional processes

Bring both hemispheres of your brain and wear comfortable clothing.

Event # 2: Public Talk –
Hip-Hop, Manga, Facebook, Twitter, Second Life, and Myth: intercultural tools for a new century

Please RSVP by Friday, April 3 to: info “at” sietarnc “dot” org

Dessert reception from the Mediterranean Deli will follow.

Description:

Patti Digh worries that the field of intercultural communication is largely irrelevant to the challenges of the 21st century. She asks: Are we using old tools and models to grapple with intercultural realities vastly changed because of the new “mongrel, global Me,” increased cultural “sampling,” the leveling effect of technology, and the transparency of social media? In fact, are these challenges revolutionizing our very concepts of culture? And are we keeping up?

What are the radically new tools we need to deal with these challenges? Patti believes they include Hip-Hop, Manga, Facebook, Twitter, Second Life, and myth, all rooted in one local simplicity: STORY. As Jerome Bruner has said, human beings are hard-wired for story. We know that. But the ways in which we are transmitting and learning from story are changing rapidly. And many of us are not keeping up. Some of us even disparage these new forms of learning, communicating, and building relationship across cultures.

This address will delve into the primacy of story, how central it is to intercultural learning and practice, and how new forms of story and new technologies can be important tools for interculturalists.

Welcome and Planning for Fall

August 16th, 2008 by Cate | No Comments | Filed in SIETAR-NC Event

Welcome to our new and improved website!

Last year we organized several fantastic events — alternatives to the U-curve with Kate Berardo, intercultural competence with Darla Deardorff, India and Turkey with special guests, VisualsSpeak with Cate Brubaker, education in Germany with Diana Levy, and of course Michael Paige’s public lecture!

Now we’re busy planning events for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. We typically meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:00pm in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, but if there’s enough interest we might try out a Saturday event or two.

Here are some topics/events we’re thinking about:

We’d like your input so please leave a comment! Please introduce yourself and tell us…

Which topics interest you the most?
What are your event suggestions?
Would you like to be, or recommend, a presenter?

We look forward to hearing from you!

February Meeting: Kate Berardo

January 16th, 2008 by sietarnc | No Comments | Filed in SIETAR-NC Event

Topic: Moving Beyond ‘Culture Shock’ and the Outdated U-Curve Model
(Teleconference)

Date: Tuesday, February 26

Time: 6-7pm

Location: Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, Conference Room #14

For 50 plus years, interculturalists have framed cultural transitions by talking about ‘culture shock’ and illustrating the well-known U-curve of adjustment with its honeymoon and crisis stages. So classic and popular is the U-curve model, that most people are not aware of the controversy behind it. This presentation will reveal the background on the model, debunk myths associated with it, and expose why it is a dangerous model for trainers and the field as a whole. From recent research, we’ll look at how and why trainers continue to use the model and present guidelines for its ongoing use. We’ll end the session discussing the potential retirement of the U-curve model and looking at viable alternatives and new approaches to training for cultural transitions.

Kate Berardo, founder of Culturosity.com, is an intercultural consultant who has trained in ten countries with over 35 nationalities. Her strategies for intercultural competency, cultural transitions, and global teambuilding have been featured in media worldwide, most recently CNN’s Business Traveller and the Dubai Daily Gulf News.

Directions to Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, Conference
Room #14:

Conference room #14 is located on the Lower Level of the Fuqua School, just below the Fox Student Center atrium. There is parking available at the Fuqua “un-gated” lot after 5pm. From 15-501 (coming from ChapelHill), take the NC 751 Duke University West Campus exit, turn right on 751 (Cameron) and then left a Erwin Rd, then right at Towerview Rd., then take your next right turn at the first stop sign (the name of the
street is either Circuit or Fuqua Dr.) This street becomes a long driveway/parking lot (stay straight, do not veer to the right!) that ends in a “loop”. You can park along the Circuit driveway after 5pm.

After you park, walk towards the loop. Go up the stairs and through the front doors (NOT the side doors) which lead to an atrium (the Fox Student center). As soon as you go through the front door you will see a
semi-circle shaped set of stairs. Go down these stairs – Conference room

#14 is the second door on the left, directly across from the PhD offices.

If you’re coming from Duke East campus or downtown Durham, pick up the directions from Erwin, but instead turn left onto Towerview.

January Meeting: Intercultural Competence

December 16th, 2007 by sietarnc | No Comments | Filed in SIETAR-NC Event

In our January meeting Dr. Darla Deardorff will lead us in an exploration of models of intercultural competence developed from the first study to document consensus from leading intercultural experts on
this concept. These models, which are being used now in a variety of programs in different countries, provide a framework for training and for program development.

Day/Time: Tuesday, January 29 from 6-7pm
Location: Room 3009 in the Global Education Center at UNC

Parking is free after 5pm in the garage underneath the GEC. To get
there, turn off McCauley Street onto Pharmacy Lane, and the entrance is
on the right hand side.
