This fall, The American Turkish Association of North Carolina (ATA-NC) will be offering Turkish Language Classes for Beginners (101) and Intermediates (201).

Classes will be held here:

Registration will take place on the first day of classes, from 6:30 to 7:00 pm. If you have any questions about these classes, please feel free to contact Buket Aydemir (buket@nc.rr.com).

About the classes:

1. Turkish as a Foreign Language (101) – Beginners

This is a beginners’ level course that will mainly follow the book and cover chapters 1 – 5.  Instructors will provide additional supporting materials. If you have always wanted to learn another language but never took the step, this might be the right time!!!
No pervious knowledge of the Turkish language is necessary.

Ages:         16 and up
Duration:    8 weeks
Schedule:   Wednesdays 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm,
October 8 thru December 3, no class on November 26
Fee:           (8 sessions) ATA-NC members $100, non-members $150

2. Turkish as a Foreign Language (201) – Intermediate

This will be a fast pace class where participants are expected to study the book and complete weekly assignments. Basic concepts, basic past and present continuous tenses will only be reviewed.
Completion of Teach yourself Turkish – Beginners book or equivalent knowledge is expected.
During classes, we’ll focus on listening comprehension and verbal communication skills, and engage in discussions in different topics.

Ages:         16 and up
Duration:    8 weeks
Schedule:   Mondays 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm,
October 6 thru December 1, no class on November 24
Fee:           (8 sessions) ATA-NC members $100, non-members $150

Pamela Ararras, an ESOL teacher in Greensboro from Argentina, will demonstrate how to make “mate” and talk about the importance of mate in Argentina.  We’ll also enjoy light refreshments.

Welcome to our new and improved website!

Last year we organized several fantastic events — alternatives to the U-curve with Kate Berardo, intercultural competence with Darla Deardorff, India and Turkey with special guests, VisualsSpeak with Cate Brubaker, education in Germany with Diana Levy, and of course Michael Paige’s public lecture!

Now we’re busy planning events for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. We typically meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:00pm in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, but if there’s enough interest we might try out a Saturday event or two.

Here are some topics/events we’re thinking about:

• All about the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and certification training
• Turkish cooking (or other cultural topic)
• The inside scoop on the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication
• Intercultural training activities, tips, and strategies
• SIETAR-NC resource library open house

Topic: Moving Beyond ‘Culture Shock’ and the Outdated U-Curve Model
(Teleconference)

Location: Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, Conference Room #14

For 50 plus years, interculturalists have framed cultural transitions by talking about ‘culture shock’ and illustrating the well-known U-curve of adjustment with its honeymoon and crisis stages. So classic and popular is the U-curve model, that most people are not aware of the controversy behind it. This presentation will reveal the background on the model, debunk myths associated with it, and expose why it is a dangerous model for trainers and the field as a whole. From recent research, we’ll look at how and why trainers continue to use the model and present guidelines for its ongoing use. We’ll end the session discussing the potential retirement of the U-curve model and looking at viable alternatives and new approaches to training for cultural transitions.

Kate Berardo, founder of Culturosity.com, is an intercultural consultant who has trained in ten countries with over 35 nationalities. Her strategies for intercultural competency, cultural transitions, and global teambuilding have been featured in media worldwide, most recently CNN’s Business Traveller and the Dubai Daily Gulf News.

Conference room #14 is located on the Lower Level of the Fuqua School, just below the Fox Student Center atrium. There is parking available at the Fuqua “un-gated” lot after 5pm. From 15-501 (coming from ChapelHill), take the NC 751 Duke University West Campus exit, turn right on 751 (Cameron) and then left a Erwin Rd, then right at Towerview Rd., then take your next right turn at the first stop sign (the name of the
street is either Circuit or Fuqua Dr.) This street becomes a long driveway/parking lot (stay straight, do not veer to the right!) that ends in a “loop”. You can park along the Circuit driveway after 5pm.

After you park, walk towards the loop. Go up the stairs and through the front doors (NOT the side doors) which lead to an atrium (the Fox Student center). As soon as you go through the front door you will see a
semi-circle shaped set of stairs. Go down these stairs – Conference room

#14 is the second door on the left, directly across from the PhD offices.

If you’re coming from Duke East campus or downtown Durham, pick up the directions from Erwin, but instead turn left onto Towerview.

In our January meeting Dr. Darla Deardorff will lead us in an exploration of models of intercultural competence developed from the first study to document consensus from leading intercultural experts on
this concept. These models, which are being used now in a variety of programs in different countries, provide a framework for training and for program development.
